K.R.U.M.P.TIONARY

Amp (adj.) - Describes a high level of intensity and excitement and is also the highest of three levels of intensity through which dancers attempt to progress during a session (Krump, Buck, Amp). Amp is a state of heightened excitement and is a place where technical dance is transcended by emotion. It is the point of dance where one might have a spiritual experience as well. “Man, that move you did made me amped!”

Amp ups (n.) – Moves made by a dancer to build intensity and are mainly used during the course of competition. These moves are important since a dancer’s goal is to reach the highest level of intensity possible. Indicative of the strong bond/interaction between the dancer and the crowd. “I just want to amp up!"

Arm Swings (n.) – Basic arm movements that are fundamental to Krump dancing. Arm swings are often named after the activity that they resemble. i.e. “throwing a baseball”

Army move (n.) – Group moves that occur during a Krump session. These moves are usually improvised and may appear during any session, battle, or other Krump competition. Army moves are not staged or premeditated and come across as very powerful and intimidating – “When you did that army move off my arm, I didn't know what you were thinking!"

Beef (n.) – A battle between arrogant and humble characters during a Krump battle. Whereas ‘animosity’ is personal, a beef only concerns matters on the dance floor, and the emotions are generally left on dance floor following the end of a session.

Big Homie (n.) - The overseer of a Krump family, this person is often a mentor in both dance and spiritual matters. The Big Homie may also be a father figure to Krumpers from single-parent families.

Buck (n.) – The second of three levels of intensity achieved by Krumpers during competition. This is where a character is identified and involves flawless character execution. It is the part of the dance where a story is told through one’s character, and at this level, a dancer demonstrates what makes him or her goofy, antagonistic, etc. This term is also used to describe a moment or move that is “breathtaking.”

Buck ups (n.) – Dance moves that are done to bring a dancer into the second of three levels of intensity (Krump, Buck, Amp). ‘Buck ups’ are known for requiring heightened body awareness and may be characterized as “organized confusion” on the dance floor. They tend to occur spontaneously and bring an element of excitement to a routine.

Bump Fakeout (n.) – A tactic employed by Krumpers to surprise both opponents and the crowd. This style involves executing a move almost to the point of completion and switching to another move at the very last moment. This move is very popular with spectators.

Character (n.) – A persona taken on by a Krumper used to express different dance styles and a variety of emotions. May be described as the sum of technique and attitude. Characters may be strong, goofy, dominant, etc., and are expressed through attire and body language. A dancer’s character becomes apparent during the second of three levels of intensity (Buck). It is a common mistake that one can embody different characters. This is not true, although a dancer may have different attitudes within his or her character. For example, Tight Eyez may express different attitudes such as raw, trash talker, arrogant, bully, or rude boy, all within the character of Tight Eyez. In this case, the spectator would see the attitude, but the character is still Tight Eyez.

Cage (v) – 1. ‘to be cage’ When a dancer is caged, an entire crew challenges the individual to a test of skill. This is generally done as part of initiation.

Fake Out Moves (n.) – Dance moves performed to confused and surprise one’s opponent and spectators. These moves often lead up to kill-offs.

Fam (Family) (n.) – a group of people who have a personal relationship. A Krump Fam is a group of people who Krump and includes Big Homies, Little Homies; this is like a crew but much more personal.

Footwork (adj.) – The fast paced movement of a dancer’s feet used to travel from one point to another. This technique is only employed by advanced Krump dancers and is a technical move requiring much finesse and balance.

Gully (n.) – An infamous character who embodies a dominant, New York City attitude.

Kill Off (n.) – Any move or combination of moves that ends a session or a battle. These ‘finishing moves’ are non-verbal ways to let one’s opponent know that he or she has been defeated, and they are often a dancer’s strongest moves.

Lab (n.) – Short for “Laboratory,” any place where dancers create and practice moves in preparation for competition. It is also a place where Krump fams exchange ideas.

Lil’ Homie (n.) – A dancer under the mentorship of a big homie.

Looky Loos (n.) – Male or female fans who attend competitions but do not participate with other spectators. Looky Loos are different from groupies, as they do not attempt to meet performers.

Power Moves (n.) – Raw arm swings, chest pops, and other aggressive moves that accompany the ‘Power’ style. Technically, these moves require a dancer to push everything out through a single part of the body.

Rounds (n.) – Like a boxing match, ‘rounds’ refer to subdivisions of a battle. If a dancer uses the phrase, “I want to go rounds,” he or she is requesting a time extension to a competition.

Serve (adj.) – Describes a move or dancer who is “lame” or “wack.” Often, a dancer who is ‘serving’ is using moves that are outdated. (v.) Using old moves in the course of a competition. i.e. 'This dude is serving’

Session (n.) – A Krump event where dancers, biters, copy-cats, looky loos, and groupies are present. It’s the place where everybody comes to express styles, ideas, and battles take place. Sessions tend to be less organized, similar to a “jam session” of musicians or a “rap cipher” of MCs.

Tag Team (n.) – (1) Any 2-on-2 Krump competition. (2) A premeditated move performed by 2 or more dancers.

Tiny Littles (Krump Babies) (n.) – Krumpers under the age of four
